ASD Language

Generative AI assisted practitioner's personalized language intervention for autistic children

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by significant language impairments or delays. Early language development is closely linked to the long-term outcomes for children with autism. Furthermore, the considerable heterogeneity in abilities among autistic children complicates the language teaching process. Therefore, implementing personalized language instruction tailored to individual children's abilities is essential for effectively addressing their language development needs. In one-on-one teaching scenarios, practitioners often design targeted interventions based on the specific needs and language proficiency levels of autistic children, frequently employing comprehensive strategies to optimize teaching outcomes, which can be challenging. Our system leverages generative artificial intelligence technology to automatically create tailored teaching materials and guides that align with the practitioner's educational objectives, the child's current language capabilities, and their reinforcement preferences. Additionally, it incorporates augmented reality (AR) tabletop projections combined with physical cards as interactive strategies. This innovative approach facilitates personalized language intervention, making it more convenient for practitioners while simultaneously enhancing children's engagement and motivation.
